Alright, I'm going to let you guys in on another "insider" secret. We (Destination) will be awarding our first annual Trip Legend Award this April to encourage and reward audacious travel adventures by honoring the most legendary trip of the previous year, inspiring others to explore beyond the standard conventions of recreational travel.
We researched the web and read numerous travel stories and have decided that this year's award will be given to Zach Levenburgh and Graham French of who, in 2006, set foot on a voyage to ; the longest moped trip in history. Their five month, 13,000 mile trip to the southern most tip of South America at speeds of around 30 miles per hour is a testament that travel is not solely about the destination.
So you are probably wondering why I am telling you this a
month ahead of time… turns out, Zach and Graham shot video of their entire trip
last year in hopes of producing a movie documentary. Their documentary dreams
were crushed after a mugging in the last 48 hours of their trip when their last
two weeks of footage was stolen along with a passport, check card, digital DV
camera and many other things.
So Zach and Graham are leaving today and flying to Buenos Aires with their mopeds and they will be spending the next three weeks shooting the footage to complete their film. They will be back at the end of the month and plan to release the documentary this summer along with a photo book.
They have dedicated 6 months of their time on this project and in speaking with them you can truly see their desire to share their trip with the world. Their determination will not allow this movie to not be made and is a huge testament to fulfilling ones dreams and making awesome things happen. In order to hit the area in the appropriate season and time frame, they are leaving the country with very few funds and they are reaching out to their future viewers for help in funding the rest of a movie not yet finished. If you would like to help them complete their dream, they have set up a PayPal donation account here.
If you have a travel story that you feel is label or Trip Legend Award worthy, send it to us at info[at]destination-nation[dot]com.
And here is their just released movie trailer:
New Years Eve, the final day of the Gregorian year, and the world's way of creating another holiday transitioning into New Year's Day holiday, seems like its usually a celebration involving copious amounts of champagne and alcohol, the need for a designated driver and a lot of hype surrounding thirty seconds around midnight.
This year, I am doing something different and it seems like the more people I talk to, the more I hear that other plans are straying for the norm as well. I'm interested.... what are you doing for New Year's and why?
[In case you haven't figured it out yet, I'll be in the desert]
It has been nearly thirty years since mopeds appeared on the scene then quickly faded away until their revival in the early 2000's. For those of you not in the know, moped subculture is either coming to a city near you or it has already taken over. The Moped Army, a moped community with 18 branches throughout the United States with over 350 branch members and 13,500 registered users is out there representing two wheeled fun at a brisk pace of around 30 miles per hour.
Mopeds may be the connecting point but when it all boils down to it, its all about the fun, the friends and the parties.
The Tom Cruisers, the Tempe, Arizona branch of the Moped Army will be hosting it's first moped rally in the middle of the desert this New Years Eve....
Here's their event itinerary.
And here's another little gem:
If any of you had the opportunity to go see the Wooster on Spring this weekend I would love to hear your thoughts since I didn't get to go and will never again have the opportunity [and that kind of bums me out].

In the right scenario, they could be on to something...
A company called Remote Control Mail now offers a service that will take your snail mail, scan it into a PDF and email it to you for you to read. In most cases, I would say this is a bit overkill... is it that difficult to open mail, its not saving any trees... but reflecting back to my recent extended stay away from home, I realize how valuable this could be for those who are traveling, on tour, or, heck, just don't want to check their mailbox. It clearly won't work for care packages or bulk items but you would never have to fill out a change of address form again.
Almost anything would be cooler if it was laser etched right? Adafruit Laser Services is an appointment only laser etching service based out of New York that offers you the opportunity to grab your laptop, iPod, cell phone or any other gadget and take them in with your artwork to be custom laser etched. And believe it or not, they even let you press the GO BUTTON to fire the laser beam!
Pricing starts at $100 USD for laptops/powerbooks and $30 USD for smaller devices like iPods and cell phones. What a deal!
Here’s an amazing examples of their work off of their flickr site:

This isn't another long winded "put the toilet seat down" rant.
You know that little black flap within the toilet is one of those ingenious inventions that doesn't quite get the brilliance award that it deserves. Its one of those things we don't even think about until its not working.
So recently, mine stopped working and in true girl fashion, i polished my nails and then located the closest guy I could find and asked "can you fix it?". Than I asked about ten other guys I knew. To my dismay, the overall answer was no! So I got on the handy dandy internet and figured out how to do it myself - which, for the record, is really the way I get most things done around the house.
If one of my guy friends would have known this, he would have been my hero and it's actually such a simple thing... you go to the hardware store, get the parts and within a few minutes wallah!
It was this blog that inspired me and clued me in that yes, I could really pull it off myself:
Unless it's cracked or ugly: don't replace that old toilet, fix it! - Kudos to this guy and his "potty mouth"
and don't forget to wash your hands when you're done!
