And They're Off!!!

Alright, I'm going to let you guys in on another "insider" secret. We (Destination) will be awarding our first annual Trip Legend Award this April to encourage and reward audacious travel adventures by honoring the most legendary trip of the previous year, inspiring others to explore beyond the standard conventions of recreational travel.

We researched the web and read numerous travel stories and have decided that this year's award will be given to Zach Levenburgh and Graham French of who, in 2006, set foot on a voyage to ; the longest moped trip in history. Their five month, 13,000 mile trip to the southern most tip of South America at speeds of around 30 miles per hour is a testament that travel is not solely about the destination.

So you are probably wondering why I am telling you this a month ahead of time… turns out, Zach and Graham shot video of their entire trip last year in hopes of producing a movie documentary. Their documentary dreams were crushed after a mugging in the last 48 hours of their trip when their last two weeks of footage was stolen along with a passport, check card, digital DV camera and many other things.

So Zach and Graham are leaving today and flying to Buenos Aires with their mopeds and they will be spending the next three weeks shooting the footage to complete their film. They will be back at the end of the month and plan to release the documentary this summer along with a photo book.

They have dedicated 6 months of their time on this project and in speaking with them you can truly see their desire to share their trip with the world. Their determination will not allow this movie to not be made and is a huge testament to fulfilling ones dreams and making awesome things happen. In order to hit the area in the appropriate season and time frame, they are leaving the country with very few funds and they are reaching out to their future viewers for help in funding the rest of a movie not yet finished. More Fun With Lazers

Philips is currently patenting a device that uses light to send hair follicles to sleep, making skin smooth for weeks at a time, without shaving or waxing. Researchers at Philips’ Lab in Eindhoven, in the Netherlands, have found that short, weak pulses of near infrared light causes follicles to change from their natural growing state to a dormant state, known as the "telogen phase".

The Philips device uses light from a halogen lamp. Pulses lasting 15 milliseconds each are filtered so that only 600-950 nanometre wavelengths reach the follicles below. Moving the device slowly over the skin spreads about 15 joules of light energy onto each square centimetre.

A sensor can also be used to automatically adjust treatment intensity to suit different skin and hair types. Three treatment sessions, over the course of two weeks, reduces hair growth by 90%, Philips claims.

Cool Food Dude.

Sometimes, when you're overcome by illness and have no other choice but to spend your day bundled up and sipping soup. You might also spend that sick day watching a lot of television like I did last evening. I was pleasantly suprised that the Travel Channel has an amazing new show "Bizare Foods with Andrew Zimmerman". The show seems like a brain child between the Travel Channel and the Food Network, following Zimmerman to a regional location and watching him visit interesting sites and eating even more interesting foods.

The best thing about the show is Zimmerman. He is larger frame man with bald head (i'll have to send him a Destination-Nation Gift Box with the Route 95 New England Bald Head Wash) that has an iron stomach and he's not pretentious or cocky about easting any of the bizarre items he comes across. And he comes across some very amazing foods in the episode I viewed he bit the head of a WHOLE fried baby chicken.

Not all the food is one the Fear Factor vibe some of it is simple as those little shrimp chips you see in asian markets and wondered to yourself "people eat this?". The show focuses on the region featured foods but also shows some of the regions interesting sites. Zimmerman took viewiers to an underground river that reminded of yet another product carried by destination-nation (the devil's icebox hairpaste).

In other words, it's a matchmaking service. The actual transfer of contract responsibility, with all its required credit approvals and completion of forms, is handled by you and the other party. There is a nominal fee of $15-20 to actually connect you with interested parties (though you can gauge interest in your plan before paying anything).

It’s a Laptop - Its Supposed to be Travel Friendly

Two short weeks after I got my new computer last year, I was in L.A. traveling on business. After a long day of work, I went back to my room at The Standard Hotel, grabbed a overpriced, three dollar bottle of Orange Crush out of the mini bar and sat down near the desk to do some work. Sitting about 2-3 feet away from my new computer, I open the soda and it makes a bee line out of the bottle for the keyboard of my laptop. A mad dash for a towel ensued and in the end, I was without a working mousepad. The day it happened it was much more dramatic… my new computer, it was too late to go out and buy a mouse, I had a bunch of work I needed to get done…. All the usual suspects.

Since that night, my laptop has obviously never been the same. Something is lost when you have to unwind a mouse cord and plug it in every time you want to use the computer. In my L.A. desperation, I bought the first mouse I could find but recently I have been looking for something more portable.

What Time is it in Kalamazoo?

World Time Clock

If you travel a lot, or makes lots of calls outside your timezone, and you are like me, you spend an enormous amount of time trying to figure out what time it is where. And if your like me, you usually calculate it wrong.

Moss has a great idea in their World Time Clock. This 12 sided clock has a city in each time zone placed along the outside which denotes the 12 o'clock marker for the city on the face.

Now if I could only remember what cities are near the 12 cities on the clock.

Not Your Typical Airline Food

There are a million, zillion airline miles programs out there. Pick an airline and run with it. Years ago I picked USAirways as my preferred airlines. Not because they were superior in service or anything but I found myself traveling with them the most ... so I picked them - it wasn't really an educated choice but it works.

Anyways, USAirways has all sorts of programs available. The newest one that I found gives me miles when I use my debit card (or and card i designate) at participating restaurants. The best thing is, they have a ton of restaurants in their program so I don't have to choose my dining experience on who will give me miles. Instead, I use my debit card every time I eat out and at the end of the month I am delightfully surprised at how many miles I have automatically accrued.

Basically what I am saying is pick and airline and maximize every miles opportunity they offer.

Have fun, shop, eat good food and get free tickets. Sounds like a good plan to me.
